Is Looting After A Disaster, Bad?
Super Typhoon Haiyan, Local Name Yolanda in the Philippines battered mostly the eastern side of the country. It was so bad that it is the first time in my life to witness news of worse case looting after disaster struck.
When I first saw the video, my initial reaction was the scene was very negative. However, upon later thinking I realized that try putting yourself in their shoes. With no food, water or just about anything there because mostly everything had been destroyed, won’t man’s natural instinct kick in?
I cannot blame them. Man will do anything to survive, even doing what people see normally as bad and shameful things. However, when you are thrust into this kind of situation, I doubt you would even have a second to think that what you are doing is right or wrong.
I really hope the government can quicken the pace and help the people affected as soon as possible. I saw the first video of the looting scene where scores of people mobbed the Gaisano mall and took away everything even dry goods.
The only part I did not like was when I saw one of the looters wave to the camera and smiling. Wow … he looked proud doing it. I think that was the face of a common thief. Other than that, I do not think the people should be faulted for looting.
I believe even the owners of Gaisano mall in Tacloban will take action against those who were caught on video.
