5 Tips For Cleaning Your Gun

If you own a firearm, it’s your responsibility to keep it serviced and in good working order. But what if you’ve never cleaned one before? Here are a few tips.

1: Unload The Bullets

It may seem obvious, but you don’t even want to know how many people injure themselves by not taking the time to properly unload their gun before cleaning. Eject the magazine and check the chamber for spare rounds.

2: Gather Your Supplies

Most cleaning kits come with everything you’ll need, but you can also purchase the parts individually for DIY efforts. Just make sure you have all the basics, including brushes, lubricants and cleaning solvents.

3: Know Your Gun’s Needs

You don’t have to dissemble a revolver to clean it. If you’re cleaning a rifle, on the other hand, you’ll want to strip the barrel and slide. Every gun is different, so do your research before taking anything apart.

4: Clean After Every Use

A single bullet can leave behind a disproportionate amount of sediment and residue. Don’t wait until your gun starts jerking or firing inaccurately before taking the cotton swaps to it.

5: Open The Windows

Solvents can emit nasty fumes that leave you disoriented and light-headed. This is, of course, the very last thing you need when handling dangerous weapons. Open a window or turn on the air conditioner so you’ll have clean air circulating throughout the room.

These are just five tips for cleaning your gun. Click here for more information, including kits and ultrasonic systems that will make the process even easier.
