Tips For Selling Your Solar Powered Home

We all know that we should switch to renewable energy, but everywhere we look someone is saying that it’s cost prohibitive or that it’s not worth it, but that just isn’t true. In fact, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Using renewable energy, like solar power, can be extremely cost effective and can actually increase the resale value of your home. Not only will it increase the resale value but if you are trying to sell your home quickly it will likely help you to sell your home faster than your home would sell without solar panels.

Just How Fast Do These Homes Sell For?

The first question on your mind is probably how much faster can your home sell for if you install solar panels onto your property. While this isn’t a guarantee for results, you can sell your home at least 20 percent faster than it would sell if you didn’t have solar panels. For example, in a development in California the homes were built with solar panel systems already installed. The developer estimated that it would take at least two years for all 257 homes to sell; however, all the homes sold within the first year of being on the market.

This is an excellent result, that means if the average home in your area takes 100 days to sell, on average your home should take 80 days to sell. That isn’t just great, it’s wonderful. Having your home sell 20 days faster can get you into the home of your dreams quicker and out of the home of your past. This is reason number one for installing solar panels.

Sure, They Sell Fast But For How Much?

Now that we know that homes with solar panels sell faster than a standard home, it is time to explore how much they sell for because it doesn’t matter how fast they sell if you have to sell short. However, selling short won’t be a problem especially for those of us who have installed solar panels into our homes. This is because, for example, in that last example I gave, those homes sold for nearly $100,000 more than they were asking for the properties. Having your home sell faster and for more than asking price is one of the best positions that you can find yourself in as a home seller.

While $100,000 extra might be out of the ordinary, on average homes sold for 17 percent more than non-solar homes. This data comes courtesy of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory or NREL. What that means for you is that for every $100,000 you are selling your home for, you can reasonably expect to make an extra $17,000. Again, as a seller, selling your home for more is an excellent position. In fact, that your home will sell for more really offsets any costs that you initially laid out for the solar panels.

Not only does your home sell for more money in a faster time period, you save money on your electricity bill. Saving money on your electricity bill is an excellent reason to get solar panels even if you aren’t thinking of selling your home in the near future. You can save up to $2,000 per year by having solar panels installed which should also have you recouping any money that you had paid for the solar panels when they were first installed. Truly it is a great choice for homeowners. It’s a great choice because it helps you sell your home faster and for more money and it helps you save money while you’re waiting for your home to sell.
