Aquaphobia

Aquaphobia is the phobia of drowning/water. It is believed that this fear is almost always linked to a previous unpleasant experience related to swimming. In my case, there is no such experience but I just abhor the thought of floating in the water even if I am wearing a life jacket. Heck, who knows, the life jacket may somehow malfunction and the fact that I do not know how to swim is the main reason why my phobia exists.
The same can be said when I travel by boat. My heart pumps fast whenever I hear the waves crash on the front of the ship. Who knows if the ship will sink? Even though life vests are on hand, I still do not like the feeling of floating in the water. During the Holy Week when my cousins and I went river rafting, the staff let us swim around on idle waters. I tried to do so with my cousins but I just could not bear the thought of my feet not touching any solid ground.
I had to go back to the raft because I was sort of running out of breath. I know people say the only way to overcome one’s phobia is to overcome it. This is one phobia I can never overcome … unless I get to learn how to float and swim.
