This will be a never ending battle between the two smartphone maker behemoths. I knew Apple would win because I think America would like to punish alien companies. However, unsurprisingly Samsung vowed to appeal the verdict.

Even if Samsung won, Apple would have done the same and this case will continue on and on. The only ones getting hurt here are the consumers. Only the lawyers of Apple and Samsung stand to benefit from this ongoing saga of patent wars.

Apple’s patent claims are stupid to begin with. But their actions come as no surprise seeing as the arrogance they have displayed is the same as the kind when Sony and Microsoft ruled during their times.

Instead of innovating, litigating is the way to go.

I am no specific fan of iOS and Android. Both are great. My wife uses iOS while I use Android. Apple singling out and focusing on its wrath against Samsung alone clearly shows fear in their minds because everybody knows Samsung is their biggest hurdle from total smartphone domination.

And it irritates me when I get to read Apple’s reasoning that consumers may mistake iPhone for a Samsung smartphone. The way they see it is that all consumers are stupid because we may not be able to differentiate an Apple smartphone from a Samsung one.

Way to go Apple.

With so many patents on even the most stupid of ideas being owned, the cost of a smartphone may skyrocket way too much in no time. And this will only hurt consumers even more.

After a few days of using Ice Cream Sandwich in my Samsung Galaxy S2, I can say that it is more than worth it. Though not totally. Why did I say not totally? Let me point out the pros and cons that I have experienced so far.

Pros

  • Excellent battery life. No matter how long I play, the battery does not get drained quickly unlike Gingerbread.
  • Fast charging. I noticed charging does not take forever compared to before.
  • You can disable useless apps easily even when your phone is not rooted.

Cons

I think there is only one flaw that I can jot down. And this problem still persisted from when I first had my Galaxy S2 with Gingerbread OS. Why the hell did they not unify the system and internal USD partition? I still am limited to 2GB of apps and games to install.

It would have been nice if users can move the installed data to its internal USD partition. The “move to SD Card” option under Settings > Application does not work and is only good if you have an external USD card added to your phone. The label is so misleading!

I am against using custom ROM since it would just make any Android smart phone ordinary and not unique. Because Samsung still did the same stupid thing by not unifying the partitions, I am definitely awaiting the time that Cyanogen Mod 9 will come out.

Not so Pro+Con

This falls as an in between. I would have liked it if Samsung changed their user interface a bit. Instead, it is the same TouchWiz display with only a few minor tweaks in other user interface areas like the Task Manager.

So is Samsung’s Ice Cream Sandwich stock ROM worth it? Depends on your usage. If you like to install many apps and games, this is crap. But if you are not much of a gamer and just want to do social networking, then the ICS stock ROM should be okay.

Think Minority Report. That is always the first thing most of my friends can think of whenever some great new innovation comes to the scene.

Samsung’s transparent smart window product is not powered by Android, so they say. At least not now. Maybe in the future perhaps. For now, those who will get to buy this product should enjoy the features and how great this technology is.
