For the first time in a long time, my curiosity for a Windows operating system has finally kicked in. I have never used Vista after that one time when I wanted to check out all the hype (and deleted it right away), nor have I ever used Windows 7 despite their claim that it is not a resource hogger unlike Vista.

Windows 8 though … now this is something else. And I mean something new. Following Apple’s style with theier next operating system, the next version of Windows will look a lot like Windows Phone 7.

CNet divulged a few details that Microsoft unveiled the design for Windows 8 at the All Things Digital conference. The software giant plans to provide a more extensive demonstration at a conference for application developers this coming September.

Something new is always something good and incorporating features in Windows Phone 7 looks to be attractive. After all this time, I finally may decide to try and switch to a new Windows version. I still prefer XP over its other sequels.

Well, this came as a huge surprise for me. I recently wrote a post about hoping Skype will not let themselves be bought by Facebook because I thought they are profitable to begin with. So when I learned that Microsoft bought them for 8.5 billion dollars, it caught me off-guard.

But after reading the news, I guess it is understandable. Skype is losing money and because of Microsoft’s purchase, they will take care of Skype’s debts. These days, it is a time of merger and purchases as the top 3 tech giants (Microsoft, Apple, Google) keep buying company after company to keep themselves ahead of the pack or just try to keep up with the top dogs.

While buying Skype can be good for any company I’m sure, I wonder what applications Microsoft plans to incorporate it into. Hotmail? Not so many users compared to GMail. Heck, the UI sucks even I do not use it. Integrate it with IE? Who uses one these days?

Since it already happened. Good luck to Microsoft. I can see incorporating Skype with their Xbox and Kinect as the only positive thing. Their Windows 7 phones are not doing any good either. (Photo from CNN)

If you are one of the handfuls left using the Internet Explorer browser from Microsoft, then it is time to update your browser to the latest version. Microsoft has launched the finished version of its Internet Explorer 9 web browser.

The company said IE9’s graphics handling, security and privacy features put it on an even footing with Firefox, Chrome, Safari and others. The release comes as Microsoft’s browser market share is being whittled down by a growing roster of rivals.

Competition is also coming from non-browser traffic generated by mobile phones and tablets. Microsoft said one key feature in IE9 was tools to stop people being tracked as they move from site to site. This information is often gathered by commercial firms to tailor ads to the specific habits of web users.

In addition, said Microsoft, separate tools in IE9 keep an eye on downloads so they can spot when viruses and trojans try to sneak onto a computer.

IE9 also has hardware acceleration built in so it can call on the power of a PC’s graphics card to display sites in more detail.

The launch comes at a critical time for Microsoft as, one survey suggests, its Internet Explorer browser is suffering a long-term decline.
