Give Back To Your Community This Holiday Season

You spend most of the year looking forward to the holiday season. You can’t wait to decorate the tree, hang lights on the house and shop for gifts for everyone on your list.

Whether you have a few dollars and a few hours you can spend on others, or you can make a more serious commitment, you can give back to your local area. Major companies around the world believe in giving back, and you can work with those companies or one of your local organizations to provide support to those who need help.

Volunteer for a Charity

Charities and organizations often need a large amount of help during the holidays. Volunteers can work in thrift stores to sort merchandise, stock the floor and work with customers, or they can work out in the field and ask others to donate money to the charity.

Organizations may also need people who can get others to donate food and toys to help families who otherwise could not celebrate the holidays. Homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters also need volunteers who can babysit and cook throughout the season.

Look for Small Ways to Help

Columbia Utilities partnered with the American Childhood Cancer Organization to help kids during the holiday season. ACCO is one of the largest nonprofit organizations that focuses on helping children diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones.

The company agreed to donate money to the organization every time that customers pay utility bills with that company. You can also look for other small ways to help. The next time that you see someone ringing a bell with a donation bucket or hosting a fundraising drive to get more money for an organization, take the time to stop and place a few dollars in the bucket.

Help Your Neighbors

Community starts at home and right in your own backyard. People in your neighborhood may need a variety of support. Elderly neighbors will likely have problems hanging their decorations, doing their grocery shopping and even cooking. You can offer to help them, or you can gather your neighbors together and agree to help those in your neighborhood with everything they need. Even something as simple as dropping off homemade cookies to a few neighbors can make you feel better about the good deed you did. Giving back helps your community grow and help those who have problems helping themselves.
