Connect To Your Mac Using Real VNC From Windows

I hope this would help mac os users who want to access their mac units remotely using Real VNC from a windows unit, be it desktop or laptop. The problem I had when enabling screen sharing in my MacBook was that after I try to connect using Real VNC, the program just closes. Not even an error message. That left me annoyed because I couldnt get it to work. Luckily after scouring the net, I came upon a forum wherein one user’s post made it work. Upon starting Real VNC, go to OPTIONS, then do the following

- Turn off Render Cursor Locally

- Set color to full color

That’s it.

This is not a solution if you have to go across the internet to vnc into a mac computer. Enabling Full Color becomes terribly slow….

jesse, hmm i only tried accessing it in our local network. and that was the solution that made it work. other colors just force the vnc client to close itself.

but if this does not work remotely, thanks for the tip

Thanks so much!!! This solved my issue. I love mac (leopard), but am required to use PC for work. I use hamachiX to tunnel to my home mac (from my work pc windows XP).

The vnc viewer just kept closing and I was frustrated.

I really appreciate you posting this to help others out!!!!

    This fixed the problem.

btw…the hamachix I downloaded on 2/15/09 worked great (no terminal, config, etc needed).

I have a intel iMac running Leopard.

hey mac lover, mac os has a vpn client already installed. i dont think you need to use hamachiX to tunnel to your mac. you can go to network under system preferences to find the vpn client there

Does not work becasue there is no screen rendoring option on my enterprise version of VNC. I tries to connect - then closes saying that authentication fails as well…so what are oyu guys using the free older version of realvnc?

Further to last comment - REal VNC Enterprise -regeistered version works as long as you have screen and remote access permissions eanbled - I did not have everythings permissions set properly - so it did not connect..

Make sure you correctly configure the server side of your Mac.

I use UltraVNC because its free and it works. As this article suggests you have to turn off local cursor rendering and set the colour options to “full colour”.

With UltraVNC the option is “track remote cursor locally” set that that to “do not display remote cursor”.

This problem had stumped me for a long time but now its all up and working!

This worked for me too. With full color, the screen updates are excruciatingly slow.

Time to look for another (more fully featured) VNC server for MAC OS X, I guess…
