I am a big fan of Brothers and Sisters. I truly appreciate the writers of the show. I mean, it is not easy to make your audience laugh at the same time cry.
If you are looking for a drama-comedy about families and relationship among siblings and between parents and children - or the lack of it - then you might want to check out this show.
Thanks to my “once-overweight” friend as she was the one who introduced me to this show. True enough, I got hooked to the series, the way that she did. So we make sure that we are updated of all the episodes.
The last episode I saw was really touching. It was about Nora, the mother, who wanted to get rid of all the things that reminded her of her late cheating husband, William. Here’s a very interesting conversation between Nora and her once-addict son, Justin.
Justin: Mom, there’re still some times when I wanna drink, or get high. And it sucks because just when I think I’m over it, I’m not. Sometimes it just feels like hell, and I have to let myself feel that. But it does go away mom.
Nora: I wish he didn’t get to me. I hate that he gets to me.
True, right? Sometimes, we think we are over something, or someone but at certain occasions, their memories come creeping in like a stranger in the night and we feel really bad. We blame ourselves for feeling that way even if we are sure that we are over it or him/her.
Take a lost love for instance. After 6 years, we can really say ” I am done and over with him.” But at any given moment, thoughts of what-might-have-been and what-could-have-been attack us. And we are taken aback, simply because we really are thinking “what could have been?” Then the imagination goes a long way to the point that we want to contact him again, get in touch and say our hi’s and hello’s. We rekindle relationships with mutual friends just so we will have access to his life once again.
But yes, Justin was right. “It does go away.” After letting ourselves feel the pain, the nostalgia, and even the longing, we will come back to our senses once again. We will know that those thoughts are purely random and are nothing but spur of the moment. Then, we smile, laugh at ourselves for even having those thoughts, and move on.
Yes, this is life. After awhile, we entertain thoughts about our past, feel terrible for things that we should have or should have not done, have the impulse to do something grand, but eventually, go back to the real world once again. This is a vicious cycle, I would say. But something that we can get out of - alive and kicking, happy and liberated.
After all, this is the true mark of “getting over someone or something” — - being able to live in the memory of that painful past, still feeling the pangs of pain and misery, but getting out happy and relieved. This is the mark of a true survivor.
